Interfaith amazing women

Today we attended the interfaith women luncheon sponsored by the Church.

“Everybody can be great…because anybody can serve…You only need a heart full of grace…A soul generated by love.” – Martin Luther King, Jr

Speaking of those who serve, I was asked to accompanied sister Sharon Eubank, Director for the LDS Charities and she was telling me how a few years ago she was able to attend a conference that highlighted ordinary people who had done some extraordinary things with their lives.

For example there was a 16 year old girl who lived through seeing entire village massacred in Africa at the age of 10 years old, who now spreads a message of hope to survivors.  Then there was a 40 year old woman in Africa that stood up to a terrible dictator and who brought thousands of African women together in Africa to help her take a stand against these tyrant leaders who were mistreating their people.  She and this group of women literally surrounded the courthouse and locked arms together and refused to let the men leave that building until they negotiated a peace agreement with one another.  They risked their lives to do the right thing.

Another story was the story of a young girl who wanted to help the people whose homes were destroyed in the hurricanes so at the age of 14 she started a charity which has gone on to raise tens of millions of dollars in the last three years.  Here she is at the age of 17 with a charity that has involvement of over 4 million kids from all over the planet.  Another was the story of a 15 year old girl that was sold into prostitution and slavery by a family member where she was abused for 5 years before she finally escaped.  She is working with authorities to help them to track down the mafia group that headed up the prostitution ring that controlled her and because of that when this young lady came to the stage to talk to the audience they had to cover her face to keep her identity a secret from the bad people still after her.

She told me that hearing all of these stories at this conference all she could do is sit there and think “What have I done in my life compared to these amazing ladies???”  It made her really stop and ask if she shouldn’t be doing more.  Certainly, it made me also think if these women could do such courageous things in the world then I had no excuse for not doing everything I can do to contribute to the world as well.  Seriously, no excuse or bad circumstance that any one of us have in our life comes anywhere close to the horrible circumstances that some of these women had going on in their lives when they stood tall to do amazing things.

Today we went to an interfaith conference and again some very remarkable women spoke about their meager conditions and how they are trying so hard to change that.  It really humbled me significantly and it put everything in perspective in my life.  It helped me realize that every one of us has a duty to stand tall and be courageous and do something really impactful and good with our lives.

We have a responsibility to do something to help others in this world.  Maybe we won’t be called on to put our lives in danger but there is something that every one of us can do, even if it’s small.  It may be as small as touching people around you with small acts of service, or it may be by getting involved in politics, or taking a stand on issues politically, or helping out with a charity. There are unlimited things we can find to do to help the world be a better place.  We just have to decide to care enough to do those.

Never underestimate the power of what one person can do. Sharon Eubank is an amazing example of someone who is constantly thinking about doing good. She is also the First Counselor in the General Relief Society. She told me that she sits in the same office Aunt Silvia used to have when she also serve as the first counselor in the Relief Society 10 years ago. I came a changed woman after these meetings and with added understanding about the world we live in. Hopefully I can find way of getting involved in my community before my time is up.

Fear not

A Great Reminder:

I love this talk by Elder Uchdorf

Certainly our world has always been, and will continue to be, imperfect. Far too many innocent people suffer because of circumstances of nature as well as from man’s inhumanity. The corruption and wickedness in our day are unique and alarming.

But in spite of all this, I wouldn’t trade living in this time with any other time in the history of the world. We are blessed beyond measure to live in a day of unparalleled prosperity, enlightenment, and advantage. Most of all, we are blessed to have the fullness of the gospel of Jesus Christ, which gives us a unique perspective on the world’s dangers and shows us how to either avoid these dangers or deal with them.

When I think of these blessings, I want to fall to my knees and offer praises to our Heavenly Father for His never-ending love for all of His children.

I don’t believe God wants His children to be fearful or dwell on the evils of the world. “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”10

He has given us an abundance of reasons to rejoice. We just need to find and to recognize them. The Lord often reminds us to “be not afraid,” to “be of good cheer,”11 and to “fear not, little flock.”12

The wisdom of a tree

Wisdom taught By Example of a Tree

One of my very favorite poets is Shel Silverstein, and one of my very favorite books, which he wrote, is called “The Giving Tree”.    It’s an amazing story of a tree that loves a young boy.  The tree cares for the boy, protects the boy, feeds the boy, and over the years ultimately gives every part of itself to help the boy to be happy, which is what gives the tree its joy.  The book is a story of unselfish love and service and the joy that brings into our lives.

So often in life when we start to feel down we will find that our focus has become too much on ourselves, on our own problems, on our own wants and needs.  The more we focus on ourselves the easier it is to become discouraged and depressed.

By the same token, when we are feeling the greatest happiness we will notice that our focus has been pointed on helping others.  The more we focus on helping others, the more joy and contentment we feel in our own life.We are talking a lot about ministering in Church. to be of service to others.

Yes, that book has some amazing lessons that come from the example of the wise and loving tree.  It’s a book that is always worth the quick read (its short with big print and pictures which is always my favorite :)). So today’s challenge is for all of us to be more like the wise and giving tree.  And in honor of wise trees here are a few more words of advice from another wise tree:

Advice from a Tree:
*Stand tall and be proud
* Go out on a limb
* Remember your roots
* Drink plenty of water
*Be content with your natural beauty
* Enjoy the View

Karma

For the past few weeks, I have been spending time with my mom,Mari and Manu in Orlando. Today I am missing her so much. She is on her way to El Salvador to spend time with my sister.  My mom loved to read the scriptures and because she can’t see too well, she listens to them now.  My mom is also the most spiritual woman I know. So much that in a way she tends to believe in anything that sounds good like good energy and bad energy, and Karma. So here are the 12 laws of Karma.

12 Laws of Karma

The great law:
Whatever we put into the universe will come back to us or what goes around comes around.

The Law of Creation
Life does not happen by itself, we need to make it happen or the journey of 1000 miles begins with one step.

The Law of Humility.
One must accept something in order to change it or accept what is, let go of what was, and have faith in what will be.

The Law of Growth
When we change ourselves our lives follow suit and change too.

The Law of Responsibility.
We must take responsibility for what is in our lives.

The Law of Connection.
The past, present and future are all connected.

The Law of Focus.
We cannot think of two different things at the same time or we can’t serve two masters.

The Law of Giving and Hospitality.
Our behavior should match our thoughts and actions or just do it!

The Law of Here and now.
One cannot be present if they are looking backward.

The Law of Change.
History repeats itself until we learn from it and change our path.

The Law of Patience and Reward.
The most valuable rewards require persistence or don’t ever give up.

The Law of Significance and Inspiration.
Rewards are a direct result of the energy and effort we put into it or the grass is greener where you watered it.

The spirit of Ubuntu

I was reminded today of the ubuntu story after Sharon Eubank and I went to Cavite to visit the food production Project. they are a non profit that teaches people how to grow their own food to help with malnutrition. They share some of their crops with us.

I am because we are or Ubuntu!

One day, a western anthropologist went to Africa to study the social behavior of an indigenous tribe. He proposed a game to the children and they willingly agreed to be part of it. He put a basket filled with fruits underneath a tree and told the children that whoever would reach the basket first would win the whole basket and could eat the fruits all by him- or herself.

He lined them all up and raised his hand to give the start signal. Ready. Set. Go!

The children took each other’s hands and started running together. They all reached the basket at the same time. Then they sat down in a big circle and enjoyed the fruits together, laughing and smiling all the time.

The anthropologist could not believe what he saw and he asked them why they had waited for each other as one could have taken the whole basket all for him- or herself.

The children shook their heads and replied, “Ubuntu, how can one of us be happy if all the others are sad?”

Desmond Tutu explains Ubuntu with these words:

“One of the sayings in our country is Ubuntu – the essence of being human. Ubuntu speaks particularly about the fact that you can’t exist as a human being in isolation. It speaks about our interconnectedness. You can’t be human all by yourself, and when you have this quality – Ubuntu- you are known for your generosity. We think of ourselves far too frequently as just individuals, separated from one another, whereas you are connected and what you do affects the whole World.
A person with ubuntu is open and available to others, affirming of others, does not feel threatened that others are able and good, for he or she has a proper self-assurance that comes from knowing that he or she belongs in a greater whole and is diminished when others are humiliated or diminished, when others are tortured or oppressed.”

What a great lesson to be learned from this story!  And what a better world it would be if there were more people with Ubuntu.  Tremendous things come about in life when we are willing to watch out for the benefit of the entire group rather than focusing on the benefit to ourselves.  I can tell you that from my own experience that my own success has always been greatest when I focus on helping others around me to succeed.   None of us exist in isolation in this world.  We are all interconnected and we all have so much value we can bring to one another’s lives if we are willing to.  Those children in Africa understood something that we as adults could all take a lesson from.

May we all live our lives with a spirit of Ubuntu!

A broken promise

I asked alexa to play Bianca’s music like I do almost every day but today was different. Tomorrow is September 11tha sad day to remember for obvious reasons. The good thing is that I will be away with Sharon Eubank visiting some projects so it won’t be too bad. Tomorrow I would be celebrating 37 years of marriage.
During one of Bianca’s songs, “The Promise” I cried - the musical notes and words touched a deep place inside me and made me reflect on a promise we all make at the altar. A promise of devotion, loyalty and faithfulness to each other but unfortunately for too many is a promise that is often broken by the person we trust the most. The broken promise and betrayal is what makes it heart- wrenching.
The melody of this beautiful song builds up layers of sweet and sad, sweet and sad, until the song caused a feeling of intensity that really did cause me to cry. Sometimes I wonder, would there be a September 11ththat I will not get sad?  would I ever stop crying when I think of this sad September day? Even though I am so happy with Daniel who I love more than life itself, I still get sad.

I do know and trust in the Lord that whatever happened between us, was for the best of all involved and wish for this sadness to someday go away completely but for now, I will stay focus packing for tomorrow's trip to Davao and if I cry a little it won't matter. I hope for tomorrow to be a wonderful day.

Where is home?

I travels for 30 hours from airport to airport one flight at a time and finally I am home.

What I discovered when I needed a place to stay in Tokyo overnight are the capsules. I went to their 9 hour Hotel Capsule. During the day you can rent a space by the hour up to nine hours and during the night you are only allowed to stay overnight and pay for the whole night and that is what I did.

The next morning I was rested, took a shower and got on the plane back to Manila. It had been almost a month since I had been away from home so needless to say, It feels wonderful to be home. Where is home is a question people asks us all the time and it can be confusing at times because if I think of my place of birth, than home is El Salvador.

If I think of the place where I lived the longest and have a home or several homes for that matter than Utah is my home, but if I think where I am now living than The Philippines is my home so to make a long story short, home will always be where my husband is and for now, home is here in Manila.
