Chapter 18 (part seven)

1.     Learn of and from them

In a nutshell, Hispanics are the people of the Book of Mormon. Let’s go back to 400 A.D. when the Ilopango Volcano near San Salvador exploded and shook the entire land.11 This eruption was enormous, killing thousands of people, instantly burning forests and destroying the land for 62 miles in all directions. While this was a terrible event for the people living near the volcano, it has provided a unique opportunity for modern scholars and archeologists to study the history, art, and civilization of ancient people frozen in time.  Excavations have uncovered carvings of men dressed in ceremonial clothing. Their homes and pottery suggest that a highly developed civilization had flourished in El Salvador between 100 B.C. and 300 A.D. One of their sacred writings has been translated into a book known as the Popol-Vuh.12 This book makes reference to teachings found in the Bible, such as the Creation, the Godhead, and many stories indicating that those people knew of God and of biblical teachings found also in the Book of Mormon. There is a long and rich cultural heritage among our people. We are all a “chosen generation” possessing desirable qualities like resiliency, generosity, resourcefulness, and civility, to name a few.

To be continued...
